How an $11 billion investment is turning NFL viewers into Prime subscribers, advertisers and customers. When Amazon committed a reported $11 billion over 11 years for exclusive Thursday Night Football rights, plenty of people questioned whether a streaming platform could justify spending roughly $1 billion annually on football. But Amazon wasn't simply buying football games. It was buying a weekly opportunity to bring millions of consumers into its ecosystem. Consider the numbers. During its TNF debut in 2022, Amazon reported more Prime sign-ups in three hours than during any other three-hour period in company history. Fast-forward to the 2025 season: 15.3 MILLION average viewers per game — a record for Thursday Night Football. +27% higher purchase rates for brands using interactive TNF ads compared with traditional media. 2.3X higher spending by Prime Sports viewers compared with other Amazon shoppers. Those numbers tell a bigger story about the changing economics of sports media. Traditional broadcasters monetize sports primarily through advertising and distribution fees. Amazon has another opportunity: using live sports to attract Prime members, engage advertisers and drive purchases across its massive retail business. Suddenly, that billion-dollar annual investment starts looking like a very different business proposition.
